Proper names for planets outside of the Solar System – known as exoplanets – are chosen by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) through public naming contests known as NameExoWorlds.

Below you will find a list of every exoplanet with a name, but as you will notice, it is much shorter than the number mentioned above. So let’s clear that up first.

Proper names. There are about 300 to 350 stars with traditional or historical proper names. They tend to be the brightest stars in the sky and are often the most prominent ones of the constellation. Examples are Betelgeuse, Rigel and Vega.
