Located at 4 East Church Street in downtown Cartersville, Georgia, the museum chronicles over 200 years of northwest Georgia’s Bartow County history. It vividly tells the story of settlement, Cherokee life, removal, Civil War strife, and past lifestyles through artifacts, photos, documents, and interactive exhibits.
As a result of the Western & Atlantic Railroad’s (W&A RR) strategic war time value, Bartow was among 5 North Georgia counties that would witness what has been called the greatest and most daring railroad adventure in US history. Bartow enjoys perhaps the greatest portion of this story.
6 Δεκ 2002 · Cartersville saw only one minor skirmish during the Civil War (1861-65), on May 20, 1864, when Confederate troops under the command of General Joseph E. Johnston occupied the depot, holding Union forces at bay while fellow Confederates escaped south across the Etowah River. The depot fell to Union fire by nightfall, and occupation followed.
