Identify your GMC or Chevrolet rear end gear ratio by the RPO Codes, usually located on the placard labeled “Service Parts Identification” inside the drivers door panel or glove box.

The rearend gear ratio refers to the relationship between the driven gear (ring) and the drive gear (pinion), and is easily calculated by dividing the ring gear tooth count by the drive gear tooth count.
An indicator with 0.001" (0.03 mm) resolution is required. Wheel endplay is the free movement of the tire and wheel assembly along the spindle axis. Correct endplay is 0.001"–0.005" (0.025–0.125 mm). Attach a dial indicator with its magnetic base to the hub or brake drum as shown below.
