Active use of engine braking (shifting into a lower gear) is advantageous when it is necessary to control speed while driving down very steep and long slopes. It should be applied before regular disk or drum brakes have been used, leaving the brakes available to make emergency stops.
Most drivers hardly ever downshift because it's relatively rarer to need to slow down too much to stay in gear, but not stop. Then, when they do, most drivers just use the clutch to brake and match, rather than trying to match revs.
Downshifting from 4-3-2-1-N as you are coming to a stop just wears out your clutch and synchros faster. While that will save your brakes a little, brakes are way cheaper to replace than anything in the transmission. Benefits are more fun when driving. Downsides don't matter. 10 votes, 12 comments.
It's usually the result of a botched downshift (e.g. when someone finds second instead of fourth gear), and what they do with the throttle when the car is out of gear is completely irrelevant. There's no way under-revving could damage the engine, let alone significantly.
31 Μαρ 2022 · The primary reason to downshift is to put the bike in the gear we need for the future. That could be for a corner exit, to pass a car, to climb a hill or to get the bike back to first gear before leaving a stop.

If you’ve ever driven behind a semi-truck cresting a hill and then heard them shift gears, you know they are doing that to make sure that the heavy vehicle doesn’t just plunge downhill taking another couple of cars with them.
