“The adrenal gland is a critical organ surrounded by a capsule, like the rind of the orange - these are the outside blue cells in the image. The red cells mark the adrenal cortex, that produce aldosterone, mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid. If you look at the yellow cells, those are the remaining cells of the fetal adrenal cortex.
My doctor gave me pictures of mine with a measuring tape (apparently abnormally long, haha) and all split open with the massive amount of stones of all different sizes. The pictures were pretty gross, but I also love that sort of thing.

It typically protrudes beyond the lower border of the liver and may touch the anterior abdominal wall.
Adrenal Gland. An adrenal gland is located on the top of each kidney. Stroma Capsule - enclosed by a thin layer of connective tissue. Afferent Blood Vessels - penetrate the capsule and branch into sinusoids that supply the cortex and medulla. Parenchyma Cortex - cells that synthesize and secrete steroid hormones.

They are retroperitoneal, with parietal peritoneum covering their anterior surface only. The right gland is pyramidal in shape, contrasting with the semi-lunar shape of the left gland.
