Relative keys have the same key signature (number of sharps or flats). For every note in the chromatic scale there is a relative major key and a relative minor key. Let’s have a look at an example. The key of E Minor has a key signature of 1 sharp (F#). The E Minor scale has the notes E, F#, G, A, B, C, and D. It is the 2nd most popular key among Minor keys and the 8th most popular among all keys. Minor keys, along with major keys, are a common choice for popular music.
The relative major key for the key of E minor is G major. A natural minor scale/key consists of the same notes as its relative major. The notes of the G major scale are G, A, B, C, D, E, F#. As we’ve seen, the E natural minor uses these same notes, except that the sixth note of the major scale becomes the root note of its relative minor.
The term “relative key” in music most often refers to a minor key that has the same key signature as a major key (or vice versa). Every major key has a minor key with the same amount of sharps or flats, and in fact, the same exact notes!
