14 Μαΐ 2024 · The R5 was a huge success for Renault in Europe, which was one of the reasons it didn’t appear here sooner: a lack of capacity. It was small; some 14″ shorter than the Rabbit, meaning more directly in the Civic’s ball park. And R&T found it to be a good performer, and economical (33mpg).
7 Ιουλ 2014 · The true competition R5-Turbo will have 250-260 b.h.p., courtesy of a sized up turbo boosting at 1.4 bar, instead of the production 0.86 bar, equivalent to 12.2 lb/sq in boost. It will also have twin intercoolers, a limited slip differential and a projected 231 lb ft torque at 4,600 rpm.
The Alpine/Gordini had the regular 1.3-liter engine bored out to 1.4 liters and tuned to deliver a respectable 93 hp. Accompanied with a new 5-speed gearbox this lifted its performance to 110 mph and 0-60 mph in 9.7 seconds, which was outstanding.
I began collecting and restoring mopeds and motorcycles before launching into cars, and today I am proud to share with you my 1983 Renault 5 Alpine Turbo. It has only traveled 85,000km (~52,816mi) since new, and it still drives as it was intended to when the odometer read zero.

As with the Mini, the Renault 5’s modest size and nimble basic handling lent themselves to what today we would call “hot hatch” versions, such as the Autobianchi A112 Abarth or Volkswagen’s Golf GTI. The first of these hot Renault 5s was the Alpine, introduced in 1976.
