Cost of Inspection. All vehicles registered in Texas are required to receive an annual inspection. All inspections include a comprehensive safety inspection. However, some vehicles are required to have an emissions test, in addition to the safety inspection.

The inspection fee listed on your registration will not match the state fee listed on your Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR).
Online. You can renew your vehicle registration online 90 days before the expiration date or up to one year after the expiration date, if you have not received a citation for expired registration. If you renew online, you’ll receive $1.00 discount. There are two online renewal options: Renew with Texas by Texas (TxT).

The vehicle must be inspected within 90 days of the registration expiration date, or 180 days for a used vehicle sold by a dealer. The bill requires DMV or the county tax assessor-collector to collect the state portion of the inspection fee at the time of registration and registration renewal.
If you need to show proof of inspection to complete your vehicle’s registration renewal, visit www.mytxcar.org to download, display electronically, or print a copy of the document. Your inspection will be verified manually, and you will be permitted to renew your vehicle registration.
