The reason for repointing is that mortar lasts roughly between 25-50 years while brick lasts approxi-mately 100+ years. Over a buildings life, foundations setle, caulking becomes dry and britle, mortar joints crack or deteriorate and water finds it’s way into the masonry and beyond.
This guidance, aimed at homeowners and non-specialist building professionals, provides a brief technical guide to the key issues and stages that need to be considered when repointing brick or stone walls of older buildings. This guidance note has been prepared by David Pickles with contributions from Alison Henry, John Stewart and Iain McCaig.
