My passport has been lost or stolen. What do I do? If your passport is lost or stolen, you have to tell us. Phone us on 131 232 or contact your nearest Australian diplomatic or consular mission. The Australian Passports Act 2005 has penalties for people who don’t report the loss or theft of their passport as soon as possible.

When you tell us your passport has been lost or stolen, we cancel it immediately and we tell border authorities in Australia and overseas.

You can face penalties if you don’t report the loss or theft of your passport as soon as you’re aware it’s missing.
Should your item be lost or damaged, and you haven’t purchased Extra Cover, you may be entitled to compensation of up to $100 and a refund of postage (proof of value may be required). This applies for most items you send with us. Claims for compensation are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
