The Voting Rights Act—along with the Civil Rights Act, one of the two most important pieces of civil rights legislation in U.S. history—introduced nationwide protections of the right to vote and thereby greatly increased voter registration and voting among Blacks in the South.
On August 6, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, which prohibited literacy tests and sent federal examiners to seven Southern states to register black voters. Within a year, 450,000 Southern blacks registered to vote.
