The owner or custodian of all dogs and cats four months of age and older shall have such animal currently vaccinated for rabies by a licensed veterinarian or licensed veterinary technician who is under the immediate and direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian on the premises unless otherwise provided by regulations.
Core vaccines are required for all dogs and puppies. Core vaccines include: Canine distemper/adenovirus-2 (hepatitis)/parvovirus/parainfluenza vaccine (given as one vaccine, commonly referred to as DA2PP, DHPP, or DAPP)
The Commonwealth of Virginia requires pets to receive a rabies vaccination before four months (16 weeks) of age. The minimum age for a rabies vaccine is three months (12 weeks), and animals are not considered immunized for at least 28 days following vaccination.
Please note: Proof of prior vaccination is necessary to obtain 3-year Rabies, 3-year DHPP, and 3-year FVRCP vaccines. If you do not have previous vaccination records, your pet(s) will be administered a 1-year Rabies vaccine and/or a DHPP or FVRCP that requires a booster in 3-4 weeks.
