- Our Coastal Crisis
Restore the Mississippi River Delta is a coalition working to rebuild coastal Louisiana’s nationally-significant landscape to protect people, wildlife and jobs. Our work is made possible through the Walton Family Foundation.
How the Delta Formed. For 7,000 years, the Mississippi River has snaked across southern Louisiana, depositing sediment from 31 states and 2 Canadian provinces across its delta. As sediment accumulated under water, plant communities began to develop, trapping more sediment and building land.
Our Work to Restore the Delta. The National Wildlife Federation is partnering with Environmental Defense Fund and National Audubon Society for the Restore the Mississippi River Delta campaign to move projects in the Mississippi River Delta from plan to action.
Comprehensive approach to management of the delta ranging from geophysical to socio-economics. Includes fisheries, wetlands and eutrophication, navigation and flood control, human communities, historical geology of the delta, river geomorphology, and sustainable management.
23 Μαρ 2007 · The MDP formed by dynamic interactions between river and coast at various temporal and spatial scales, and human activity has reduced these interactions at all scales. Restoration efforts aim to re-establish this dynamic interaction, with emphasis on reconnecting the river to the deltaic plain.
The Restore the Mississippi River Delta Campaign is an independent coalition of advocacy organizations with a longstanding history in national and regional conservation efforts. We seek to advance large-scale coastal restoration projects in order to address Louisiana's land loss crisis.
