How the Delta Formed. For 7,000 years, the Mississippi River has snaked across southern Louisiana, depositing sediment from 31 states and 2 Canadian provinces across its delta. As sediment accumulated under water, plant communities began to develop, trapping more sediment and building land.

22 Απρ 2021 · If all goes as planned, 2 years from now engineers will punch a massive hole in a nearby levee that holds back the Mississippi River. A 3.5-kilometer-long canal will carry sand and muck from the muddy river into the bay, helping rebuild vast wetlands eroded by sinking land and rising seas.

23 Μαρ 2007 · Currently, about two-thirds of flow is discharged via the lower Mississippi directly to the Gulf and one-third is discharged via the Atchafalaya River to a shallow bay where a new delta is forming. The location of levees is shown on the lower river as well as the location of the MRGO.
The diversion is being designed to strategically mimic the natural riverine processes that built the Mississippi River Delta and to help build and maintain land in the degraded Barataria Basin. This sediment diversion is located along the west bank of the Mississippi River near Myrtle Grove.
