If you want to use a light gun for duck hunt you're going to need retron. I don't like their controllers at all...I use original or the ones made by retrobit, who makes the retro duo. I like both systems...prefer retro bit controllers over hyperkin.
Yes, it actually works. If you're near Denver, we could probably work out a time for you to play it yourself. Pretty much any LCD, LED, or OLED TV is compatible. All you need is an original Zapper and an original Duck Hunt game cartridge to modify. I'd be happy to answer more technical questions about how it works, if there's interest.
