Introduction. A number of passages in the Bible refer to a book called “the book of life,” a figurative expression that originated from the ancient customs of (a) keeping various kinds of records like genealogical records (Neh. 7:5, 64; 12:22, 23) and of (b) registering citizens for numerous purposes (Jer. 22:30; Ezek. 13:9).
4 Ιαν 2022 · Answer. Revelation 20:15 declares, “If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” The Book of Life, in this context, is the set of names of those who will live with God forever in heaven. It is the roll of those who are saved.
The Book of Life occurs in the New Testament one time in Philippians (Philippians 4:3) and six times in the book of Revelation (Revelation 3:5; 13:8; 17:8; 20:12, 15; Revelation 21:27). The Greek phrase translated as Book of Life is biblion ho zoe.
26 Φεβ 2022 · But one book is supremely important: the Book of Life. The Bible says that in God’s presence “books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the Book of Life… only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life” will enter Heaven (Revelation 20:12, 21:27).
This distinction is made between those who have believed in Christ and those who have not. But such predestination to both damnation and blessedness is peculiar to the Revelation. This book is “the book of life of the Lamb that was slain” (13:8), and “in him was life” (John 1:4).
