In a reverse or thrust fault, the hanging wall has moved up relative to the footwall. The distinction between a reverse fault and a thrust fault is that a reverse fault has a steeper dip, greater than 30 degrees. Reverse and thrust faults develop in sectors of the crust that are experiencing compression.

Strike-slip fault. Normal faults occur when two plates, one on top of the other, slide past each other and create the fault. Reverse faults occur when one plate slides under the other, creating a vertical offset. Strike-slip faults happen when two plates move horizontally past each other.
A reverse fault occurs primarily across lithological units whereas a thrust usually occurs "within" or at a low angle to lithological units.

While on Earth, such ridges are mostly eroded, on planetary bodies without significant erosional processes, the ridges are usually preserved.
