7 Σεπ 2019 · Thunder Bay Amethyst Mine: What to Expect. The Amethyst Mine Panorama is 115 miles north of Grand Marais. The drive is quite scenic as it parallels Lake Superior. We crossed the US-Canadian border at the Pigeon River. And, stopped to pick up sandwiches for a picnic lunch in Thunder Bay.
You can break big rocks open or dig in the muck for gems of all sizes. I've found points, rosettes, small pieces and bigger garden rocks in various hues of purple ranging from lilac to deep purple (almost black). Can also find "red" amethyst, which is characteristic of Thunder Bay. Pro tip: bring cash & have fun.
