8 Μαΐ 2017 · The purpose of this study was to provide a systematic review of the efficacy and adverse effects of riboflavin as a prophylactic agent in the treatment of migraine headaches.
Research in migraineurs has demonstrated elevated levels of various oxidative stress markers and pro-inflammatory cytokines, and a migraine preventive effect of riboflavin. Animal models have also shown that riboflavin reduces these markers.
Objective: We conducted a short review of relevant literature which contends that migraine is associated with a wide-spread metabolic abnormality of mitochondrial oxidative metabolism, leading to the use of riboflavin and coenzyme Q10 as prophylactic therapy for migraine.
There is no statistically significant reduction in severity of migraine headache with CoQ10 supplementation. CoQ10 supplementation reduced the duration of headache attacks compared with the control group (MD: −0.19; 95% CI: −0.27 to −0.11; random effects; I 2 statistic=0%; p<0.00001).
3 Απρ 2015 · Treatment with a proprietary supplement containing magnesium, riboflavin and Q10 (Migravent® in Germany, Dolovent® in USA) had an impact on migraine frequency which showed a trend towards statistical significance.
Despite the huge health and economic burden of migraine headache, few medications have been approved for its prophylactic treatment, most of which can potentially induce serious adverse effects. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a supplement and has shown preliminary benefits in migraine prophylaxis.
In summary, several randomized clinical trials suggest that the supplementation with CoQ10 may be beneficial in migraineurs in respect to reduction headache severity, frequency, and duration of headache attacks, with no side effects.
