Richard Nels Van Patten (born January 15, 1955), known as Nels Van Patten, is an American actor and former professional tennis player. He is married to Nancy Valen. Born in Brooklyn, Van Patten is the eldest son of actor Dick Van Patten and the former Patricia Poole.

Richard Vincent Van Patten was born on December 9, 1928, in the Kew Gardens section of the New York City borough of Queens, the elder child of Richard Byron Van Patten, an interior decorator, and Josephine Rose (née Acerno), who worked in advertising. Richard Nels Van Patten adopted his middle name as his professional forename. This name reflects one of his father (Dick Van Patten)'s best-known television roles ("Nels Hansen" in Mama (1949)).
He was married to Pat Poole (née Patricia Poole) for 61 years; the union produced three sons: Nels Van Patten, James Van Patten, and Vincent Van Patten.
From his first marriage to Betsy Russell he has two sons: Richard and Vince. His second marriage, on April 15, 2003, was to The Young and the Restless actress Eileen Davidson; they have one child together, a son named Jesse Thomas Van Patten. [1]
