Formerly known as The Mosque and the Landmark Theater, the Altria Theater was originally built for Shriners of the Acca Temple Shrine. In 1940, the building was purchased by the City of Richmond, which converted much of its interior for municipal use.

The City of Richmond-owned theater is nestled in the middle of the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University and it now plays host to a variety of events including Broadway productions, The Richmond Forum, concerts, comedians, children’s theater, lectures, school commencements and fashion shows.

The Altria — for decades called “the Mosque” for its striking Moorish Revival architecture — has been hosting concerts since it opened on October 28, 1927.
17 Ιουλ 2012 · However, few know the origin and history of what some still call the Mosque and what will be called the Altria Theater: it was funded by Freemasons, served as an anti-aircraft command center during World War II, used by Richmond Police who built a shooting range in the basement bowling alley.
It became a municipal auditorium in 1940 and was continually in use until 1994. The 1994 renovation restored the original decoration and provided additional public art, including a mural in the grand tiered lobby and metal grilles for the box office.
