Right axillary US revealed multiple abnormal lymph nodes with cortical thickening and complete loss of the hilum. US-guided biopsy of right breast mass showed IDC and right axillary node was positive for metastatic disease.
During a lymph node biopsy, a surgeon or radiologist removes all or part of a lymph node. Then, a pathologist tests it in a lab for signs of disease, like cancer or an infection. This procedure allows healthcare providers to diagnose diseases, determine how serious they are and then plan treatments.
You usually have a biopsy of any lymph nodes that look abnormal. The biopsy is sent to the laboratory to check for cancer cells. If this shows that the cancer has spread to the nodes in the armpit, you will have surgery to remove all or most of them.
You may also hear your doctor calling these axillary lymph nodes. This is because axilla is the medical term for armpit. The diagram below shows the network of lymph nodes in your axilla and breast.
To check if cancer has spread to the axillary lymph nodes, most people have a procedure called sentinel lymph node biopsy during breast surgery. Before or during this procedure, a radioactive substance called a tracer and/or a blue dye is injected into the breast.
