In this lesson, students will use written and photographic evidence to examine and explain social, political, and legal opposition to suffrage for women from the colonial period through the early twentieth century.
In 2020, we celebrated a key milestone for women’s contributions to a thriving democracy and the hard-won right for some women to vote. Just as importantly, this anniversary commemorated and highlighted the discrimination and exclusion within this landmark moment in United States history.
22 Φεβ 2021 · The Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted women the right to vote. This right—known as women’s suffrage—was ratified on August 18, 1920: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

It failed to grant women the right to vote. In 1869, Anthony and Stanton organized the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) to work for a federal constitutional amendment, guaranteeing all American women the right to vote.
