11 Νοε 2022 · In the case of the French tenor Benjamin Bernheim, who made his Metropolitan Opera debut on Thursday night as the Duke in Verdi’s “Rigoletto,” the recordings don’t do him justice.
Jonathan Miller’s Mafioso-style Rigoletto, first unveiled in 1982, would seem to be imperishable and has returned yet again to the Coliseum. If the set has not already been infested with woodworm, it’s lost little of its evocation of New York’s Little Italy of the 1950s.
1 Οκτ 2024 · Rigoletto returned to the Metropolitan Opera on Monday evening in Bartlett Sher’s production, which was first seen on New Year’s Eve 2021. The main draw then, as now, was Quinn Kelsey in the title role.
At the narrative’s core lies the ominous curse: Monterone, a desperate father, curses Rigoletto, who callously mocks him for attempting to defend his daughter’s honor. This curse becomes the catalyst for Rigoletto’s downfall as a father, leading to the ruin and death of his beloved daughter.
When the 37-year-old Giuseppe Verdi wrote Rigoletto, he was on the cusp of hitting the big time. Although he had already seen 15 operas premiered at theatres across Italy plus Paris and London, of those only Nabucco (1842) and Macbeth (1847) would go on to be ranked among his major achievements.
