Symptoms and signs of ringworm in a dog. It can take up to three weeks from your dog becoming infected before you notice symptoms on them. Dermatophytes feed on hair, nails and dead skin cells. They infect one hair shaft then, gradually, all those surrounding it.
The most common way to treat ringworm in dogs is to use a combination of topical therapy (application of creams, ointments, or shampoos) and systemic therapy (administration of anti-fungal drugs by mouth).
Ringworm is an infection of skin, hair, or claws caused by a type of fungus. In dogs, about 70% of ringworm cases are caused by the fungus Microsporum canis, 20% by Microsporum gypseum, and 10% by Trichophyton mentagrophytes.
