The Riviera Theatre, or Grand Riviera Theatre, as it was first called when it was opened on August 24, 1925, was designed by John Eberson.
The Grand Riviera stood at Grand River Avenue and Riviera Street, near Joy Road. The theater was designed by John Eberson in the atmospheric style, which whisked moviegoers away to another world, in this case an old Roman garden under a moonlit sky.
The Grand Riviera Theater is a brown-brick, three-story structure designed in the Italian Renaissance style. The dominating feature is the eighty foot tall, octagonal corner pavillion with its large, arched, multi-paned windows and liberal application of cream colored terra cotta decoration.
