City Hospital (also known as Island Hospital or Charity Hospital) was a hospital on Roosevelt Island, Manhattan in New York City. History. Originally named Penitentiary Hospital and located on what was then known as Blackwell's Island, the first hospital was built in 1832 to serve the prisoners housed at Blackwell's Penitentiary. [2] .
City Hospital was a municipal hospital located on Welfare Island (formerly named Blackwell's Island, now named Roosevelt Island). The exact dates associated with the hospital are unclear, as many of them found in reference works and the collection conflict.

On April 1, 1854 construction of the Smallpox Hospital began on the southernmost point of Blackwell Island (Roosevelt Island was formerly known as Blackwell Island). This building would be the first major U.S. hospital dedicated to the care of victims of this virus.
