Long-winged, northern raptor found in open areas like fields and marshes. Plumage variable; light morphs generally pale with dark belly and dark patches on "wrists." Dark morphs have brown or blackish body with finely banded tail and striking white flight feathers. Some birds intermediate.
10 Δεκ 2021 · Rough-legged Hawk In Flight, Finally. And fighting lunacy with lunacy… using birds. We’re lucky enough to have pretty good numbers of Rough-legged Hawks this winter and in the last few weeks I’ve photographed a fair number of them but decent takeoff and flight shots have eluded me.
10 Δεκ 2013 · Winter is the time to see this large, open-country hawk in southern Canada and the U.S., where it may be perched on a pole or hovering over a marsh or pasture on the hunt for small rodents. Found globally across northern latitudes, this species occurs in both light and dark forms.
In flight, tail shows white at base, dark banding at tip; blackish patch at wrist of wing contrasts with paler flight feathers. Body plumage quite variable; typical juvenile shows black belly contrasting with streaked buffy chest.
30 Σεπ 2018 · I believe this was the only time I’ve ever photographed a hawk of any species actually eating in flight (though I do have some of an eagle eating a fish in flight). Usually they carry prey in their talons but this bird had just transferred the vole from talons to beak and immediately after this shot was taken it swallowed the rodent.
