The RPG-7 [a] is a portable, reusable, unguided, shoulder-launched, anti-tank, rocket launcher. The RPG-7 and its predecessor, the RPG-2, were designed by the Soviet Union, and are now manufactured by the Russian company Bazalt. The weapon has the GRAU index (Russian armed forces index) 6G3.
In general the chances of penetrating the front of a current model fo the Abrams (or any other modern tank) with a RPG are very small. The frontal armor - at least the turret armor - is designed to resist anti-tank guided missiles, which can feature a lot larger warheads.
As for the tank itself, the only way the tank will be destroyed/damaged is if the rpg hits the rear of the tank and destroys the engine and/or sets the tank on fire or if the rpg manages to blow a track off. Also, just because the rpg hits a track does not mean it will destroy the track.
Tanks today have very durable armor and ERA bricks. Some are even equipped with active protection system. The RPG-7 has been in service since 1961. Does it still work against most modern tanks?
