9 Σεπ 2008 · In fact, I usually recommend the KJV (for historic and literary reasons), the NET (for accuracy especially, but also for elegance and readability), and a Bible of their choice (which could be either for reading [NIV, TNIV] or memorizing [RSV, ESV]).
Today, there are dozens of modern English translations. To be clear, when we say English translations, we mean whole new translations (e.g., NIV), not the same translation put into different forms (e.g., NIV Study Bible, NIV Life Application Study Bible, NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible).

In sum, what can we say overall about the NIV 2011? First, it is a well-thought out translation, with checks and balances through rigorous testing, overlapping committees to ensure consistency and accuracy, and a publisher willing to commit significant resources to make this Bible appealing to the Christian reader.
Bottom line— the NIV and the NRSV are still the best readable accurate translations available, along with the NET Bible.
It is better than the NET Bible, although there are a couple of places that we want to change for the next addition of the NET Bible. The NIV made a change on Mark 1:41 that we were planning to institute.
