The rune defender is the 3rd strongest defender. It is used for its attack bonus and is held in the off-hand in place of a shield. It requires 40 Attack and 40 Defence to wield.
Defenders are obtained by killing cyclopes in the Warriors' Guild at a rate of 1/50 for bronze through rune and 1/100 for dragon. After obtaining the first defender of each metal, the player must leave the room to show Kamfreena the defender before the next tier defender can drop.
According to the wiki, you have to show her an "Adamant Defender or better" to get them to drop rune. Using the transcript, it seems showing a dragon defender will make them drop rune. Still might be worth double checking to be safe before losing your last Addy/Rune Defender though.

Ideally you want to use a proper rune/dragon offhand and then swap to a shield for the few defensives that actually need one. Defenders will increase your defense a bit, but can be useful as a shield swap if you wanna use defensive abilities.
