4 Αυγ 2023 · Epidemiology. Baker's cysts tend to occur most commonly in adults aged 35 to 70 and most often are associated with inflammatory joint diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or as a result of overuse or injury to the knee.
The fluid will gradually be reabsorbed into the body within a few weeks. The recommended treatment for a ruptured cyst is rest and elevation (keeping the affected calf raised). Prescription painkillers – usually a combination of paracetamol and codeine – can also be used to control any pain. See your GP for a prescription.
Treatment of Baker’s cysts in children is usually not necessary. The natural history of Baker’s cysts in children is that they disappear spontaneously, but the time in which they do so is variable. They will often get bigger before they finally resolve and there are no long-term problems to the knee. Figure 1.
