YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport, near Rush's hometown. The band was introduced to the rhythm as Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport. A VHF omnidirectional range system at the airport broadcasts the YYZ identifier code in Morse code.

Funny story: I had read that YYZ is the name of the Toronto Pearson airport and that the song was supposed to convey the hustle and bustle of an airport, but my husband did not know this and on a road trip to Toronto he excitedly pointed on the roadmap that he was looking at said "look, the airport is named YYZ, they must have named it after the Rush song!"
