“But Ruth said, ‘Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.’” — Ruth 1:16 ESV. The Book of Ruth may be outlined simply according to four scenes, as follows: Scene 1: In Moab (1:1–18) A Setting of Adversity (1:1–5)
The next verse tells us the name of the man was Elimelech and his intention of a short visit turned into ten, tragedy-filled years — and Elimelech never returned to Israel. The name Elimelech means “God is king” — but he didn’t really live as if God was his king. 2. Tragedy in Moab.
What does Ruth 1:2 mean? This statement provides the names of the people mentioned at the start of the chapter (Ruth 1:1). An Israelite family—parents and two sons—flee the famine in Judah around Bethlehem. They settle in Moab, a nation regularly at war with Israel.
