What the inquiries into the sinking of the USS S-4 revealed. At 3:50 P.M. on the afternoon of 17 December 1927, the commandant of the Boston Navy Yard received a flash radio message from the U.S. Coast Guard Destroyer Paulding: "Rammed and sank unknown submarine off Wood End, Provincetown."
17 Δεκ 2013 · PAULDING rammed the sub, a section of her bow telescoping into S-4’s hull and punching two holes, one in a ballast tank and one in the pressure hull. Freezing water flooded into the boat, causing her to heel to port and begin to sink by the bow.

USS S-4 (SS-109) was an S-class submarine of the United States Navy. In 1927, she was sunk by being accidentally rammed by a United States Coast Guard destroyer with the loss of all hands but was raised and restored to service until stricken in 1936.
On 17 December 1927, while conducting submerged trials off Provincetown, Massachusetts, S-4 was rammed by the U.S. Coast Guard destroyer Paulding. Holed in the starboard side, just forward of her deck gun, the submarine sank immediately.
The submarine S-4 (SS-109) seen from the Falcon (AM-28) as it went down in the test dive Monday in Great South Pond, off Block Island. The crewless hulk of the vessel in which 40 men their lives is equipped with lifting hooks as a safety feature for raising it after accidental submersion.
