Elders have tiny, 5-petalled creamy-white flowers in large umbel-like clusters. The berries are small, purpley-black and grow in clusters on purpley-red stems. Ash leaves look similar to elder, but they are thinner, narrower and have more leaflets per stem.
(Some of elder’s many vernacular names include bour- or boretree.) In common with other trees with white blossom, such as hawthorn and rowan, the elder is steeped in Faery- and Goddess-centred mythology.

Elder tree identification is by pinnate leaf, white flowers, black berries and large purple buds. It easily recognised in late spring when it bears flat plates of white flowers and in autumn from its black berries.
