This structure is crucial for the Saguaro cactus, allowing it to anchor itself firmly in the ground. 📏 Depth and Stability. The taproot can extend an impressive 5-6 feet deep.

The saguaro is an icon of the Sonoran Desert region! This impressive plant is the largest cactus in the United States, growing 10 to 40 feet or even 50 feet tall. (Picture a three-story building!) Though they’re about 30 inches across, their root systems can extend as far as 100 feet (or as wide as three school buses parked in a line).
One is a thick root system, which is only about one foot long, and there is also a thinner root system that grows to a length equal to the height of the Saguaro Cactus. The Saguaro Cactus has a very strong framework consisting of three different structural features.
