SAI (Student Aid Index) is in replacement of the former EFC (Expected Familt Contribution) as of this new update to FAFSA, and was created to minimize the shock that many parents were feeling when given the total they would have to pay (or something like that, idk! Pretty much the same as EFC).
The SAI is actually a really simple number, based on the docs in most cases you will take the Maximum Pell Grant Amount (for some reason I can't find the specific number yet, but the guide I'm using uses $7,000 as an example) and subtract the SAI from that value.
The way FAFSA explains it is, that your COA (Cost of Attendance) minus your Student Aid Index is equal to the ESTIMATE of how much aid you might receive. So if your COA is $20,000, subtract your SAI from that ($10,000) and what's left is what your estimated "need-based aid" is.
