11 Αυγ 2021 · Agreeing to the contentions raised by the petitioner that even a slight increase in the prices or reduction in the pages will affect the circulation of the newspaper, the Court held that it hampers the freedom to speech and expression as per Article 19 (1) (a) of the Constitution.
This is considered one of the landmark decisions that forwarded freedom of press jurisprudence in India, reinforcing that restrictions related to number of pages, price, advertisements, and circulation of newspapers, constitute a direct infringement on the freedom of speech and expression.
