Wilderness permits are not required, but the Forest Service strongly recommends you to obtain a Wilderness Permit before going into any of San Bernardino National Forest’s eight wilderness areas. The permit system benefits both you and the wilderness area by helping the Forest Service monitor visitor usage and environmental impacts.

A free wilderness permit is required for day hikes and overnight trips. The requirement is only for portions of the wilderness within San Bernardino National Forest, not areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
31 Αυγ 2020 · Beginning September 1, 2020 day hikes up many popular trails in the San Bernardino National Forest will require a wilderness permit, and new trailhead quotas have been created to reduce overcrowding on the trails and help preserve the wilderness experience.
1. Wilderness Visitor Permit: Day use and overnight permits for the Cucamonga, San Gorgonio and San Jacinto wilderness areas are required. See the forest order.
Free wilderness permits required for all day use and overnight camping in the San Gorgonio wilderness. They may be requested in person, or online. See our Permits page for details. You may obtain your permit in person at the Mill Creek Ranger Station, Barton Flats Visitor Center (summer only), or the Big Bear Discovery Center.
For day use a permit is required on any of the trails in the San Gorgonio Wilderness. These are free and self-issued. If camping overnite anywhere within the San Gorgonio Wilderness a permit is also required.
