The climb up to San Gorgonio is long, but so so worth it. It is a rite of passage for any Southern California hiker, and it is the perfect training hike for some of the higher peaks in the Sierra. A wonderful hike all around! (Once you get back to the car, of course!).
San Gorgonio is the tallest mountain in Southern California, and a rite of passage for serious hikers in the area. At 11,503′, “Old Grayback” provides an excellent high altitude training for those preparing to summit Mt. Whitney, and an easy drive from most of LA and Orange counties.
The timberline is located at 11,300 feet in Southern California and hikers have an opportunity to observe the Arctic Alpine life zone while climbing Mt. San Gorgonio. This wilderness also offers hikers the opportunity to observe the only glaciation south of the Sierra Nevada.
