17 Μαΐ 2024 · The scam solicitations are personalized with writers’ email addresses and names, and the “Official Entry” link at the bottom is also personalized (which is why I’ve redacted part of it). Note the fake email address (ALLi’s real email is @allianceindependentauthors.org).
5 Μαΐ 2019 · They were running the contest to collect email addresses of aspiring writers to target with their bogus services. BTW, query services are pointless scams. A query letter is a job interview.

Scammers have been targeting writers with fake invitations to conferences, purporting to be sponsored by major publishers such as Macmillan. The speaking engagement "contract" tricks writers into sending money or disclosing personal data. 14 Μαΐ 2021 · The Goodreads Extortion Scam. Recently I received an email from a writer who described an extortion scheme that had targeted them on Goodreads. The scammers threatened to post a blizzard of one-star reviews and ratings if the writer didn’t hand over money to “buy our paid review offers”. Here’s the first email the writer received.
Some of the fraudulent messages referenced the writer’s listing in the Poets & Writers Directory—a free resource at pw.org that contains author profiles, some of which include e-mail addresses (though a publicly available e-mail address is not a required element of a directory listing).
There are hundreds of writing contests. Most are real; some are prestigious. But some are fake. While fake contests don’t make up a huge proportion of the total, there are enough of them to warrant caution. And even if a contest is legitimate, winning may not do anything to build your writing resume. Contest Fakes
