Sawtooth oak is winter hardy and can be grown in soils from sandy loam to clay loam. However, the best performance is achieved in deep, well-drained soils. It can also be grown on reclaimed surface mined land where favorable moisture conditions are present and pH is above 5.0.
Sawtooth oak may be established, from bareroot seedlings, containerized plants, or acorns. One year old bareroot seedlings or containerized plants should be planted 15-20 feet apart for maximum acorn production. In areas where multiple rows are used, the spacing should be no less than 20 feet apart. In
Quercus acutissima is a medium-sized deciduous tree growing to 25–30 metres (82–98 feet) tall with a trunk up to 1.5 m (5 ft) in diameter. The bark is dark gray and deeply furrowed. The leaves are 8–20 centimetres (– inches) long and 3–6 cm (– in) wide, with 14–20 small saw-tooth-like triangular lobes on each side, with teeth of very regular shape.
Sawtooth Oak is established in widely scattered locations across Louisiana. It is classified by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries as a Tier II invasive species defined as “currently causing moderately negative impacts on wildlife or natural communities in Louisiana”.
28 Αυγ 2020 · Sawtooth Oak grows quickly, relative to other Oaks, rates of 3-4’ per year are not uncommon. It bears fruit at a very young age, as soon as five years from seed, and produces a heavy crop almost every year, unlike many native Oak species.
