Lutra lutra exhibited a mean hair density of about 70 000 hairs/cm2 (whole body, appendages excepted), the mean indi-vidual density ranging from about 60 000 to 80 000 hairs/cm2. The dominant hair type were secondary hairs (wool hairs), the hair coat comprising only 1.26% of primary hairs (PH).
Adult sea otters typically weigh between 14 and 45 kg (30 and 100 lb), making them the heaviest members of the weasel family, but among [3] the smallest marine mammals. Unlike most marine mammals, the sea otter's primary form of insulation is an exceptionally thick coat of fur, the densest in the animal kingdom.
4 Ιουλ 2021 · Sea otters have a U-shaped audiogram with a frequency range of 125 Hz to 32 kHz and peak sensitivities of ~1.6–22 kHz in air and 4–22.6 kHz underwater, similar to that of Pinnipedia (Fig. 3.17; Ghoul and Reichmuth 2012, 2014, 2016).
The sea otter is covered in dense fur that consists of two layers. The short, more dense, under layer of fur can have as many as 1 million hairs per square inch, which is the densest of any mammal. Humans only have about 100,000 hairs in total on our heads.
Hair density ranges to 165 000 cm −2 and is the densest hair among mammals. Most marine mammals insulate with a blubber layer, but sea otters are the only one to rely exclusively on an air layer trapped in the fur for insulation.
3 Νοε 2015 · Sea otter fur is very dense and has a greater number of hair follicles per inch than any other mammal. Adult sea otters can reach lengths of up to 1.8 m but average about 1.4 m. Adult male otters weigh from 32-41 kg with some males reaching up to 46 kg. Adult female otters average 18-27 kg. CITES Identification Sheet. Habitat.
18 Ιουλ 2024 · One of the most well-known sea otter fur adaptations is its incredible density — the densest of any animal — with up to one million hair follicles per square inch. This dense fur is vital for insulation as sea otters do not have a blubber layer like other marine mammals.
