The Silver Memorial Bridge is a cantilever bridge that spans the Ohio River between Gallipolis, Ohio, and Henderson, West Virginia. The bridge was completed in 1969 as a replacement for the collapsed Silver Bridge, although it is located about 4,300 feet (1.3 km) downstream (south) of the original.
On December 15, 1967, the bridge collapsed while handling heavy traffic and killed 46 people. This accident changed the nation’s view of bridges across the country. The government ultimately changed the way bridges were inspected to ensure safety and functionality. The bridge was completed in 1928.

10 Αυγ 2024 · About a week before Christmas 1967, rush hour traffic crawled across the Silver Bridge that connected Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio. Dozens of cars sat bumper-to-bumper on the structure. Then, without warning, the Silver Bridge collapsed into the Ohio River.
POINT PLEASANT - The collapse of a towering suspension bridge over the Ohio River here Friday plunged an estimated 60 to 70 vehicles into the cold waters and sent an untold number of persons to their deaths.
The bridge connected Point Pleasant on the West Virginia side with Kanauga, Ohio. More broadly, it made Point Pleasant a central hub in a highway system linking Columbus, Ohio, with Charleston and points further south.
