In 1918, the Chicago-based Ludwig Drum Company debuted the Jazz-Er-Up, an all-in-one set with a single-bass drum and pedal, a snare, two cymbals and a woodblock. It was a significant innovation.
The drum set is a hybrid of instruments from around the world, from cultures that were assembling in port cities like New Orleans. The snare and bass drum were once slung over shoulders in European militaries, the drum heads pulled tight by ropes, and that tradition carried over to American armies.
21 Απρ 2020 · Small cymbals, 10 to 12 inches in diameter, became a part of the drum set during the early 1900s; known as “sock” cymbals (the predecessor to the hi-hat), they were used mostly for special effects — often, songs ended with the drummer delivering a sharp smack on one.

Eventually tom-toms and a pedal-operated hi-hat cymbal device (originally called a “low boy” because the cymbals were only 12 inches off the ground; try an internet image search for “drum set low boy” and its predecessor the “snowshoe pedal”) were incorporated as well.
In 1928, Avedis III, his brother Puzant, and his uncle Aram Zildjian began manufacturing cymbals in Quincy, Massachusetts, [25] [26] and the Avedis Zildjian Co. was formed the following year in 1929. [27] Avedis III sought out jazz drummers like Gene Krupa to understand their needs. [28]
