Architecture. In designing the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the late architect James Ingo Freed, of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, visited a number of historical Holocaust sites, including several camps and ghettos, to examine their structures and materials.
The Museum collection features a wide range of art works made secretly for the artist or for fellow prisoners. These include greeting cards, small everyday objects, devotional objects, and drawings embodying memories of freedom.
The Museum of Holocaust Art, inaugurated in 2005, is located in Yad Vashem's Square of Hope. The Museum's rotating permanent exhibition displays some 120 works of art. Most of these works were created during the Holocaust itself, or before the war by artists later murdered during the Shoah.
Required reading for its methodological contribution in the study of Holocaust memorials, and for its overview of five countries and their political context leading to erecting Holocaust memorials, including involvement of survivors, location, and design competitions.
