This division is reflected in a prominent taxonomy of long-term memory (Squire, 1987), in which semantic and episodic memory are characterized as distinct components of the explicit (or declarative) memory system for facts (semantic knowledge) and events (episodic knowledge).
This chapter provides a brief overview of episodic memory, or the ability to consciously recall events from one’s personal past. The historical context of this concept is sketched, as well as its relationship to other kinds of memory.
