semimembranosus muscle (musculus semimembranosus). It is exclusively tibial with its three tendons rendering the muscle functional, whatever the position of the knee may be. There are other attachments, sometimes de- scribed are merely expansions extending to the menisco-

purpose of this article is to review the normal anatomy and variants of the distal semimembranosus tendon and the ad-jacent structures (the distal semimembranosus complex), as well as the biomechanics and pathology of this complex structure. Emphasis is placed on the MR imaging depiction of the normal anatomy and pathologic findings.
Objective To describe the normal MR anatomy and variations of the distal semimembranosus tendinous arms and the posterior oblique ligament as seen in the three orthogonal planes, to review the biomechanics of this complex and to illustrate pathologic examples.
Functional anatomy of the semi-membranosus muscle: main thigh pump and derivative route of the Hunter’s canal. Jean-Franc ̧ois Uhl, Maxime Chahim, Claude Gillot and Vincent Delmas. URDIA Unit EA 4566, Department of Anatomy, Paris Cite Sorbonne University, Paris, France.
The functions of distal semimembranosus complex can be summarized as following: Hamstrings generally play a role in hip extension and knee flexion. Otherwise the semimembranosus alone is an hip extensor and a knee flexor/intrarotator.
The dissection of 18 knees taken from fresh cadavers has led to a detailed description of the semimembranosus muscle (musculus semimembranosus). It is exclusively tibial with its three tendons rendering the muscle functional, whatever the position of the knee may be.
