The Senate became a self-perpetuating, automatically constituted body, independent of the annual magistrates, and a recognized factor in the Roman constitution, with extensive powers.
In Rome, the body of the senate and senatorial priesthoods helped to maintain its religious power; across the empire senators defined their magisterial powers by following the model of emperors and relying on the piety of sacri ce and benefactions.
Presenting a new collection of historical, epigraphic, prosopographic and material evidence, it argues that as Augustus turned to religion to legitimize his powers, senators in turn also came to negotiate their own power, as well as that of the emperor, partly in religious terms.
Recently, scholars have begun studying the Roman Senate as a working assembly and looking at the Senate’s role in the Roman state, and they have come up with some important results. This chapter is designed as a contri-bution to the emerging new view of the Senate that sees that the imperial
